Turkey Day

As much as I hate the exalted status of this fake holiday, it is an American one, and every bit as relevant as Independence day, Presidents day, and Memorial day.

What I dislike most is that the above frequently become 4 day weekends, and sometimes 5. Thanksgiving is fixed to a Thursday for that very reason, but I’d so much rather it was a Saturday.

But back to the happy thoughts. I had planned to spend the day immersed in the plotline of “24,” but Phil calls me out of bed, and invites me to the Sherwood family gathering (that’s her on the left).

I’m all about this, because a) I’m really not doing anything else, and b) there’s really not a varied stock of food here in the house. I had planned to eat what I always eat, and be thankful that I’ve a place to eat it in.

Good enough for me, but not good enough for my friends. I mentioned earlier in the week that this is the sort of event that having a lady friend really helps me with. My family is scattered to the winds, and gathering them all together would take both an act of Congress, and one of a higher , court mandated separate power than the State. So I play late November by ear, and act accordingly.

Dinner is awesome, and I’m glad I left the couch. Jack Bauer and I will relate tomorrow.

This is the first year in the last 13 that I have not called Arizona on turkey day. It’s just not the same down there anymore, and I feel that part of my life slipping away from me. But we are still in pretty regular contact, and the relationship is changed.

Theres a lot of that going around, these days. I got several text messages throughout the day, and that was nice. The phone did not ring (also nice), and the satellite dish brought us images from the outside world.

All together, a good day to be thankful for, and on.

Song of the Day

Banks got me to thinking, and indeed, I have the same problem.

Here’s today’s. There will be more.

Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria

Away out here they got a name
For rain and wind and fire
The rain is Tess, the fire Joe,
And they call the wind Maria

Maria blows the stars around
And sends the clouds a’flyin’
Maria makes the mountains sound
Like folks were up there dying

Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria

Before I knew Maria’s name
And heard her wail and whinin’
I had a girl and she had me
And the sun was always shinin’

But then one day I left my girl
I left her far behind me
And now I’m lost, so gone and lost
Not even God can find me

Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria

Out here they got a name for rain
For wind and fire only
But when you’re lost and all alone
There ain’t no word but lonely

And I’m a lost and lonely man
Without a star to guide me
Maria blow my love to me
I need my girl beside me

Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria

Maria
Maria!
Blow my love to me
